Camp MacLeod
From: Camp MacLeod

Camp MacLeod was purchased by the Presbytery of Cape Breton in 1952. The property consisted of two buildings on over three acres of land and 120 metres of water frontage. It was originally built by the Kiwanis Club of Sydney during the 1930s and used as a health camp for underprivileged children. The camp was initially named Camp Mira but it was later renamed Camp MacLeod after Rev. Hugh Ma cLeod, who served the area in the mid 19th century. The camp had a main building which housed a dormitory and washrooms, a dining room with a fireplace, bedrooms, a kitchen, a fridge. The property also had a cabin which later became the director’s cabin. During the winter of 1977-1978 a new build ing was erected, it had electric heat, a kitchen, washrooms, and a basement for equipment storage.
Camp facilities have improved over time, and all buildings as well as the waterfront are wheelchair ac-cessible. Camp MacLeod is rented to area youth groups and hosts summer camps for various age
groups.
